Acorns
Welcome to Acorns!
Acorns is a clean, calm and friendly Reception environment where children are encouraged to learn, explore and grow with confidence. We value calm, purposeful learning and provide a carefully balanced mix of structured teaching, physical activity and child-led learning. This approach allows us to respond to the individual needs and interests of our children while introducing them to new experiences, resources and ideas through the Meridian Trust Curriculum.
We believe that books open the door to endless possibilities. Our fantastic range of carefully selected texts provides children with opportunities to discover new ideas, explore a broad range of subjects and develop a genuine love of reading. Our books are chosen because they challenge and stretch children's thinking, introduce them to new experiences and, importantly, are engaging, enjoyable and fun.
Our curriculum gives children a strong foundation in the key areas of learning. Each week, we focus on a specific aspect of Literacy, developing children's vocabulary, comprehension, communication and early writing skills. In Maths, we follow White Rose Maths alongside Mastering Number, using practical and active approaches to help children develop a secure understanding of number and mathematical concepts. Learning from our adult-led sessions is then extended through our continuous provision, giving children the opportunity to apply, practice and deepen their understanding independently.
Developing independence is a particularly important part of life in Acorns. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their classroom, resources and belongings, with adults explicitly teaching strategies for organising, tidying and caring for our shared environment. We want children to feel capable and confident, knowing that they can make choices, solve problems and take responsibility for themselves and their surroundings.
We also recognise the importance of teaching children skills that support their health and wellbeing. For example, we explicitly teach tooth brushing and are working towards the Local Authority's Smile Award accreditation, helping children to understand the importance of looking after their teeth and developing healthy habits from an early age.
Language and communication are woven throughout our provision. One of the ways we develop children's storytelling, early literacy and oracy skills is through Helicopter Stories. Children are encouraged to share their own ideas and stories, giving them a genuine purpose for speaking, listening and creating. These experiences help children develop confidence in expressing themselves while also encouraging them to listen carefully to others.
Our outdoor environment provides another exciting dimension to children's learning. Children have regular opportunities to develop their gross motor skills through a wide range of physical activities, while our outdoor provision also includes building areas, sand and gravel pits, a much-loved mud kitchen and a year-round allotment. These spaces encourage children to investigate, create, collaborate and explore the natural world through hands-on experiences.
Building positive relationships is at the heart of our classroom community. Through interactive circle times, children learn about one another, develop their listening skills and begin to understand and appreciate the experiences and ideas of their peers. Alongside this, our immersive phonics programme Little Wandle gives children the foundations they need to develop their early reading and writing skills in an engaging and purposeful way.
Above all, Acorns is a place where children are encouraged to be curious, independent, kind and confident learners. Through a carefully considered balance of teaching, play, exploration and practical experiences, we aim to give every child the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm they need to take their next steps in their learning journey.
